In Sweden, education is compulsory between six and sixteen years of age. Most children begin school during the autumn term of the year the turn seven. However, parents have an opportunity to let their children begin during the year they turn six. Education is free, as are books, materials and school meals.
Every child is guaranteed a place in a municipal school, and has a right to attend a school close to his or her home. As parents, you can choose to have your child attend a different school in the municipality, provided there is a space there. This applies both to municipal schools and independent schools.
Sollefteå’s municipal schools offer education from pre-school class (förskoleklass) to ninth grade. In order to increase cooperation, preschool, school and childcare share facilities in most schools.
Additional information on primary and lower secondary school can be found on the website of the Swedish National Agency for Education (Skolverket).
