Every four years, general elections are held in Sweden. The Swedish people then choose which political parties will represent them in Parliament, County Councils and Municipal Councils kommunfullmäktige.
In order to vote in municipal elections, you must be at least 18 years of age and registered in the municipality. Foreign citizens, in addition, must have been registered in Sweden for three years. In parliamentary elections, only Swedish citizens may vote.
Any eligible voter may be elected as a member of the Parliament, Municipal Council or County Council, but as a matter of fact, most of the members are politically active and belong to a party.
